fibre art juried showsThis month I have been getting back to painting though fibre hasn’t totally been ignored – I am still working on the commissioned piece. That is taking quite a long time as I do most of my work by hand and this is the largest piece I have ever attempted.
Two of my hangings are going to be on view in Washington. Kokanee Run is my piece in From Away, an exhibition of work by 28 members of the Fibre Art Network. From Away is a Maritime expression meaning “Not from Around Here.” This exhibit debuted in 2012 at the Canadian Quilters' Association Show in Halifax, Nova Scotia and since then it has been in exhibitions throughout Western Canada. This next exhibition will be part of the Association of Pacific West Quilters show in Tacoma, August 23-25, 2013
The other piece is “Ichthyic Biosphere - Save Our Oceans Save Our Planet”. The “Abstracted” exhibition by the Fiber Art Network from Western Canada will explore the concept of realistic and abstract art. Pairs of artists will illustrate their subject – one in a more representative fibre art piece and one in a more abstract/non-representative style. Kathleen Hamann-Buckoski and I worked on the subject of fish. Mine in a more design mode and Kathleen’s definitely abstracted. We had to have a common title so chose Ichthyic Biosphere to which we added our own bent – Kathleen’s being with the added title “Dead Ocean Dead Planet. This was a juried selection and they are now off to La Conner, Washington and will be on view at the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum in the historic Gaches Mansion from October 10 until December 29, 2013
